The Top 5 Silliest Band Names Ever
Here’s a scenario: you’re starting a rock band, and need to make a name for it. Because you’re completely obsessed with all things ties, and have a huge collection of tie bars and tie chains to prove it, you name your band Tied for Ties. Does that sound lame even to you?
The good news is that your band won’t be the first to end up with a name no mother would give a child. Below are some of the bands who, regardless of the quality of their music, have the most ridiculous names on record.
1. Puddle of Mudd
The flooding of the Missouri River back in ’93 inspired this band to name itself, Puddle of Mudd. And yes, that’s Mudd with an extra ‘d’ in it.
2. The The
This name is oh so wrong on so many levels, but to keep the explanation sweet and short, let’s just say it’s not a very smart name for any group that wants to search the Internet for The The?
3. Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts
The only possible explanation Russell Crowe got away with this gimmicky name is that the other guys in the band were too frightened to protest, lest he start beating them with the nearest household objects. And perhaps, in their hurry to say yes, they forgot to use the plural form of the noun.
4. Chumbawamba
Rage Against the Machine isn’t the best monicker for a group that wants to express passionate political views. But, at least it does get the point across that its members are infuriated with society for reasons you’ll have to buy the album to discover. U2 isn’t something you’d associate with anything political, but Bono makes up for it by going to U.N conferences and writing songs about world peace. But, Chumbawamba? It’s no wonder I haven’t heard of anyone who has heard of this singing group of British anarchists!
5. !!!
According to Nic Offer, the lead singer, this is pronounced Chk-Chk-Chk. I’m not sure how fans are supposed to scream that out loud, but I do know googling it can be a problem.
So, go ahead and name your group tie tacks. The industry has seen its share of strangeness; it won’t bat an eyelash over your group monicker.
