There are good children’s books that tell a good tale and a moral lesson while being pleasant about it. And then there are children’s books that tell a bad tale and a dubious moral lesson while being kickass about it. And I don’t mean kickass in a cool way either.
The difference: Well, one I will gladly put in my son’s decorative bookends, the other I will definitely consign to the remotest place I can find on my globe bookends. These books belong to the latter category albeit I must say that I mean no insult for the writing skills of the authors only the messages they send to the impressionable minds of young kids, mine included.
Hiroshima No Pika
Of course, we must teach our children about the terrors of war in general and of atomic bombs in particular. But must we do so in a way that can permanently damage the fragile psyche of our children? Even the cover of this book – that of a topless woman running through the streets filled with blood – is adequate material for nightmares! And take note that this is meant for pre-schoolers.
There is a time for our children to know about war and kindergarten is not it. Maybe when they are a little older and can understand the distinction between life and death, right and wrong, cost and benefit in a deeper way, then we can think of educating them about Hiroshima in an objective way.
Who Cares About Disabled People?
If I were to put this book in a prominent place in my father’s brass bookends, I am sure to get a scolding like I have never experienced since I was a kid. You see, my Dad is a disabled man and for him to see his grandkids reading a book with such an insane title is an incitement to a battle of words. And I have never been inclined to battle with my Dad, disabled or otherwise.
But that’s not the main offense of this book. According to it, disabled people include kids who like to eat (read: fat) and who like to huff paint, child wonders and teen athletes as well as alcoholics! The message is obvious: When you don’t fit in with the norm, you are a disabled person. In other words, you are now officially a freak.
Maybe the authors had good intentions but good intentions have a way of getting lost. These tomes just got lost in the Sinai Desert!
With that said, I would rather stick to Dr. Seuss’ books! At least, the only frightening thing my child encounters is the Cat in the Hat and he is not even that intimidating!

History of music : History of music is as old as history of mankind. Music is one of the art forms. But it is an abstract art. It is based on imitation of various kinds of sounds produced and activities happening in nature. The effects of music are mainly pleasing to ears, emotional and psychological. Human basically is creative; imitates nature, natural events and tries to reproduce them. In the course, tries to modify, improvise them. Further, as civilization progressed, there were refinement in man’s ways of thinking, habits, creativity, outlooks have influenced music also. The present form of music is the result of all such evolutions. Still it is under experimentation and improvisation.
Science of music
As the civilizations flourished in different parts of the world had differences in their cultures, music also has differences depending upon the place of origin e.g., Western Music and Eastern music, Indian music consisting of Hindustani and Carnatic music, Pershian music etc. As the civilizations had different class of people, the music also got developed as Classical and Folk music suiting to the class of people.
Music can be basically classified as vocal and instrumental. Sounds produced by the life forms and inanimate things form the basis of vocal (singing) and instrumental music respectively.
European music
Science of music: Music is science of sound. Sound is a form of energy, propagates in the form of mechanical waves and needs a material media for its propagation. All the sounds produced in nature are not useful to music. The sounds which are pleasing to ears and having soothing effect are only useful for music. Vibrations produce waves. Number of waves produced per second is called frequency. Each sound has a particular frequency and timbre. Commonly the frequency is called pitch and timbre is its quality. Pitches are arranged in ascending order to form musical scales. The Musical Scale contains set of seven frequencies which have a fixed relation with each other. Each pitch is called a musical note. The starting note of a given scale is called a key note. The interval between two notes is further subdivided forming sharp and flat notes. The musical scales are same for vocal and instrumental music.
The periodicity of events in nature has given rise to the concept of rhythm. The time interval between two beats is tempo. Playing or singing notes in different tempos form different patterns. Such permutations and combinations will form a large number of patterns; their formation depends upon the creative capacity of the individual. The words or lyrics can be combined with notes and rhythm to form compositions and sung. Different instruments played simultaneously forms an orchestra. The singing with an orchestral support is musical presentation or performance.
As music is an abstract art and since the musical notes do not have any words, music is beyond any language, religion, cast or creed, is spiritual in nature. So music is Divine it can integrate and unite all the people in world.
